Foundation for Physical Disability, Esperanza Nuestra Center

The Foundation "Esperanza Nuestra", created in 1970 by the jesuist Father Aldo Giachi Bertelli, has as general mission to contribute to obtain the development and the integral rehabilitation of disabled people, giving preference to those people in situation of extreme poverty, with the purpose of facilitating their reintegration into their families and society.

For the fulfillment of this objective, "Esperanza Nuestra" Foundation that, from its very beginning, has been guided by Christian principles, directs its work towards three main lines of action:

Rehabilitation

Esperanza Nuestra Center is one of a kind in our country. Located in Maipú, the center seeks for integral treatment of people with severe physical disabilities (medular lesioned patients, encephalic lesioned patients, and others) older than 18 years old with no economic resources to afford a specialized treatment.
“Esperanza Nuestra" has the capacity to receive 24 people as inpatients, and from 6 to 10 people as outpatients, taking care of a total of 80 people annually.

Housing Support

- Through 2 Independent Life Communities, which are houses adapted for the normal development of physically disabled people who use wheelchairs to move themselves, with capacity to receive 22 people, located in Huechuraba and El Bosque.

Integration and Human Promotion

- Through the Christian Movement of Physically Disabled People "Esperanza Nuestra", composed of 30 Groups at a national level, whose members (700 people approximately) are inserted in the society, working close together to open integration spaces and to improve the quality of life of disabled people, being "individuals subject to their own action", by means of an apostolate of the disabled people by disabled people.

in this line of action, much work is done focused on the formation and personal development of its members through spiritual retreats and spaces for reflection; at the same time, instances for relaxation and recreation are created and offered, considering these a right for all people, and for those disabled in situation of poverty, who can not have access to places for resting due to architectural barriers and obstacles. It also promotes the association as a form of joint fight for the vindication of rights of these people.
