What is a Chaplain?

The Chaplain of Hogar de Cristo is a member of the Board of Directors, and is appointed to this position by the Superior of the Society of Jesus in Chile.

Since the days of Father Hurtado, Hogar de Cristo has been under the charge of the following chaplains:

Since 1952, Father Guillermo Balmaceda S.J. Since 1966, Father Alvaro Lavín S.J.
Since 1952, Father Alvaro Lavín S.J. Since 1979, Father Renato Hevia S.J.
Since 1963, Father José Cifuentes S.J. Since 1982, Father Renato Poblete S.J.

Under the chaplainship of Father Renato Poblete, Hogar de Cristo attained considerable development.
When he took over in 1982, Hogar de Cristo had 7 branches, 16 thousand contributing members, and provided attention to 350 people a day.

Eighteen years later, our Foundation has 50 branches, between Arica and Porvenir (extreme north and extreme south of Chile), more than 520 thousand contributing members, and meets the needs of 22 thousand people a day.

Our present Chaplain is Father Agustín Moreira, S.J.

Father Agustín Moreira spent his school years at the San Ignacio de El Bosque and, later, studied Agronomy at Universidad Católica de Chile.

For four years, he managed a farm in the locality of Padre Hurtado, on the outskirts of Santiago, never imagining that, 13 years after joining the Society of Jesus, he would become the successor of Father Hurtado, in charge of the latter's main achievement: Hogar de Cristo.

In 1996, he traveled to Spain to obtain a licentiate in Moral Theology and to pursue a Master's Degree in Bioethics at the Universidad de Comillas, in Madrid.

He was ordained in 1998.
